This week Year 2U, 4L and 3H took part in ‘The Big School Birdwatch.’ Children came prepared with binoculars, waterproofs and gloves. We talked about how to use binoculars correctly and how to use the focus dial. The children have been learning about birds in previous weeks so already have a good knowledge of our British birds. Armed with the RSPB’s bird spotting sheet, clipboard and pencil, the children were raring to go. We talked about how we needed to walk around the grounds quietly looking in trees, on the ground and in the sky. I was overwhelmed by how many birds the children were able to identify and how enthusiastic they were too.
The survey takes place over an hour and towards the end of the hour the children were able to identify some birds in flight and birds sitting in trees based on the shape, size and behaviour. Once into class the children recorded their results onto the RSPB’s Big School Birdwatch page.
The children also enjoyed taking part in the RSPB’s online educational games where they were able to complete food chains, colour birds, complete wildlife jigsaws and identify feathers. To take part in these games at home, click on the link below. Have fun!
